DKNY Sunglasses
Born in 1948, Donna Ivy Faske grew up in Long island with her mother, a model and her step-father who was a tailor. Starting young, the ambitious teen began to sell her designs along New York’s famous Central Avenue at just 14 years of age.
After attending and leaving design college, Donna Karan started her fashion career as an assistant designer with Anne Klein in the early 60s and after years of hard graft the young designer was eventually promoted to associate designer in 1971.
1974 saw the sad death of Anna Klein and the fashion house was then taken over by Takihyo Corporation of Japan. Karan, together with her former classmate and friend Louis Dell'Ollio, became head designer of the house. After 10 years at the helm of Anne Klein In 1984, Karan left the company and together with her then husband Stephan Weiss and Takihyo Corporation, Karan started her own business with the ambition to design modern clothes for modern people. She showed her first women's clothing collection in 1985.
Gaining a reputation for her stylish and clean separates for the everyday wardrobe, Karan mastered the art of creating easy to wear, luxe pieces that could be mixed and matched, resulting in a range of varied ensembles for modern day understated sophistication. Self inspired, the designer insisted on designing pieces that she, herself would wear too. The jersey dress and opaque Lycra tights were just two items that she nailed and became known for being the master of.
By the mid 80s, the designer had won the title of ‘Queen of 7th Avenue’. Expanding her fashion empire to a diffusion line, Donna Karen founded her brand DKNY in 1985. Combining her initials with her love for the energy of New York City and the working women of New York’s need for smart separates, Karan created the unmistakable and break through brand.
